ITALY. Varese, 28th July 2011. Mohammed Elmi arrived in Italy, with his family, his bride and their three children, on June 2003 after a fly from Mogadishu to Tripoli and a three days boat trip from Tripoli to Sicily.
Transferred at first in Bari and then, after received a one year humanitarian residence permit, in a small village near Varese. Here he started immediately to follow Italian lessons and to search a job and, during the school's summer break, to follow drive lessons to take Italian drive licence. When he found a job in an another village, the Caritas association, together with the direction of the reception centre where he was living with his family, helped him to find a place to stay near his workplace, just because his work shift ended at 10 p.m. and there were no trains to return home. When his employment contract ended he received the offer to become the keeper of a shelter for refugees in Varese where he actually works and lives with his family.
